(A Sense of Scale)

A while ago, I was given a little drawing book for my birthday ... it's a spiral bound sketch book with a pretty cover. Not something I would buy for myself ... but a welcome gift none the less. I decided to fill it with little sketches and drawings as a stream of consciousness.

This is page 12 ... HB and 2B pencil ... about 7 cms by 14 cms ... 7 days. I hope you can see the details. The can of fixative splurged ... it was nearly empty and behaved very badly. The result is that the paper has buckled.

Hi Sal....can you give us/me some insight in what you are trying to achieve with these wonderful drawings of utter beauty?

Now that is a most difficult question ... the hardest of them all in fact.

On one level, I am just trying to maintain my skills and work towards the completion of a larger project while I also deal with life, work, kids etc ... so the project is already a success in that sense.

If you are asking me about individual drawings ... I usually have little idea what a drawing will be when I start it ... I aim for a doodle approach and just see what happens ... Sometimes there are constraints ... like I might want to play with composition (e.g. Page 8 is a failed mandala!!) ... or I might want to play with a theme (I seem to be going for glassy balls a lot hehehe!) ... but in general, I let the drawings take themselves where ever they wish to go ... I think most of the drawings are about sex, decay and death if you look really closely ... those thoughts are universal to us all.

The only real goal in my mind seems to be to keep drawing in the midst of a hectic life. I aim for one drawing per month, I feel that is achievable given everything going on ... almost a diary perhaps of things in my mind at that time.

Thank YOU for sharing. I'm interested in what other people experience when they draw.....what they feel...what they see. Perhaps I'm looking for reasons why I myself do certain things...this way or that way.....interesting stuff; the ongoings in the minds of people....
