Silverpoint on watercolour (not surface) paper ...
I was introduced to Richard A Kirk's silver point work by Janelle McKain and his work blew my mind (See [link]). Inspiration followed and I purchased a stick of silver to play with and this is ... well not the first thing I've drawn with it ... but the first decent thing ... It's like graphite only different!
I really should use a smooth surface for the next one ... all those indentations really messed with my mind!
Very interesting! The picture is so wonderful and I really like the way it is sectioned; roughly into thirds. I did a little bit of research about the silver point work and where to find the supplies. It sounds incredibly fun! So, thank you for the info.
Funny, when you call this piece 'daydream' it makes me think that perhaps the bottom part of the drawing is dreaming up the top, or vice-versa, or both.
So glad you posted about that artist.. his stuff is amazing. Your piece here makes me want to try silverpoint. Does it look very different from graphite? Were you able to acquire it from an art supply store, or somewhere else?
(and if watercolor paper worked well except for the texture, I recommend using hot press watercolor paper, it's all I use because the texture of cold press really does mess with detail)
You totally should try it. I bought a 5 cm stick of 0.5mm silver wire for 1.58 GBP (~2.00 dollars) over the internet (London) and had a mechanical pencil ready for it (I shaped the end with very fine sand paper). I also had the zinc white gouache already. I really should have primed some Arches HP but I thought it would be useful to use an old piece of watercolour I had already stretched as I was practising ... That's me being lazy and not wanting to use expensive paper for a project I really hadn't worked out properly! I have now stretched some Arches HP so that will be my next project
You can buy acrylic based primer and I'm experimenting with a bone ash primer I bought from the same place as the silver ... This is a really useful site, especially if you are in the USA
The silver wire hardly disappears ... this is going to make many drawings! It is a fun project indeed!
